You walk into a mechanical room that has a box hanging there, is this a balanced ventilation system? HRV or ERV? This session will be on heat recovery and energy ventilation systems. Learn when it's appropriate to specify an HRV/ERV to be installed or if doing an energy audit on a house that already has one, how to evaluate the system. Mike will share with you some of his knowledge and experience regarding balanced ventilation that he has gained since 1986 from being a small HVAC/IAQ contractor to a Technical Service Advisor and Technical College Instructor. This session will cover aspects of balanced ventilation from sizing, duct design, control selection and how systems are operated. Learn how to make an assessment on functionality and operation, what are some different methods on measuring air flow for balancing the system, if dampers are in place to prevent backflow. Control options and if maintenance is understood and performed by homeowner are a few details covered. Balanced ventilation is still new to a lot of parts of the country, with IAQ concerns and changing building codes it is becoming more common in our housing, this session will discuss what works and what does not.
