Indoor Environmental Quality Conditions in Weatherized and Unweatherized Homes

How healthy are indoor environments in low-income homes? Is weatherization correlated with improvements in indoor environmental quality (IEQ)? This presentation addresses these questions using data collected from IEQ sensors installed in over 50 low-income homes in Knoxville and other cities in Tennessee. The sensors are collecting temperature, humidity, TVOC, PM2.5 and CO2 from weatherized and unweatherized homes. Results will be presented that address how often homes’ IEQ exceeds recommended thresholds. The presentation will also address spikes in hazardous IEQ conditions that could exacerbate and maybe cause the onset of acute respiratory issues. For example, differences in the frequency, magnitude and duration of spikes in PM2.5 will be assessed across weatherized and unweatherized homes. Funding for this research is being provided by grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the Wellcome Trust.
