This session will discuss Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) and how to properly size, install, and verify their performance. The CLEAResult Rhode Island HVAC program has been training HVAC contractors since 2007. With the focus on reducing global warming, ASHPs are now a major source of residential and commercial heating focus and incentives. This session will demonstrate Best Practices, Proper Sizing, and the results of a 2022 Field Study.
Our MS Check test procedure, developed by CLEAResult staff to evaluate proper installation will also be discussed. To date, contractors have submitted over 4000 installed system tests in the RI HVAC program, with an 92% passing rate.
The final topic will be a discussion of the transition in 2026 to lower global warming potential (GWP) A2L refrigerants and the system/equipment changes that will be required.
As there is no single type of dwelling, there are multiple systems that can provide comfort year-round. In designing programs to maximize Energy Efficiency to reduce Global Warming, weatherization and proper sizing of the heating and cooling systems need to be considered at the same time, to prevent poor performance and comfort issues.
Learning Objectives:
By attending this session, attendees will:
Define the different type of air source heat pumps and how to select a properly sized system for the home
Demonstrate how to test that a ductless heat pump is properly charged
Explain the transition to new refrigerants for 2026
