Comprehensive home retrofit projects are complex, expensive, and often disruptive to homeowners and occupants. Retrofits conducted in sequenced stages can appeal to homeowners concerned about the financial burden and inconvenience associated with one-time whole-home retrofit and electrification projects. These “staged retrofits” allow customers and contractors to develop a sequenced retrofit plan, align projects with home maintenance or remodeling work, plan for equipment and appliance replacement, and track progress toward their overall objectives. Research found that staged retrofit options can better meet consumer needs and interests. Programs built around these options can increase their flexibility – and energy savings. This approach—coupled with strong federal and efficiency program incentives—can also make the cost of decarbonization more manageable.

By attending this session, attendees will:
  • Understand the opportunity to increase home retrofit activity through market offerings and programs centered on staged retrofits
  • Learn the roles of contractors, program administrators, lenders, and other stakeholders in selling and supporting staged retrofits through all stages of the project
  • Engage with the emerging community of practice building the resources, tools, and business/program models for successfully attracting and supporting customers in staged retrofit projects
