Professor of Practice
Syracuse University
Syracuse, New York
Ian M. Shapiro is Associate Director for Building Science and Community Programs at Syracuse University's Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems. He also teaches as a Professor of Practice at Syracuse University, in the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Ian’s primary focus is heat pumps. He has designed heat pumps for Carrier Corporation, consulted to multiple heat pump manufacturers, authored original heat pump theory, been awarded patents relating to heat pumps and air conditioning, and done research on multiple types of heat pumps (air and ground source, vertical stack, air-to-water, room heat pumps, etc.). He wrote the specification for window heat pumps that resulted in the development of two new products for New York State’s “Clean Heat for All” program. Other areas of research include lighting, heat pump water heaters, indoor air quality, insulation, and windows. He has authored a novel zero-energy local energy code that emphasizes affordability in new building design, adopted and in use in Ithaca, NY. Ian founded a consulting engineering firm, Taitem Engineering, and serves on its board. He is the author of two building science textbooks, Green Building Illustrated (2020) and Energy Audits and Improvements for Commercial Buildings (2016).
